Patrick Garvin
Hello there! I spent 15 years working in newspapers as a visual journalist, including nine years at The Boston Globe. I mainly worked in information graphics, but also expanded into alternative story forms, front-end development, and user experience.
I now work as front-end developer at Maritz Global Events, focusing on user experience and accessibility. I've been training staffers there on best practices and helping them get a formal accessibility policy/program in place. I also teach web design at the School of Journalism at Mizzou, teaching students the basics of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, all with a focus on accessibility.
I've also been training newsrooms and organizations on how to incorporate accessibility into their work. I've been consulting with Chemical & Engineering News to help them get their staff up to speed. I've also done presentations lately for The Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting, CTV News in Canada, and The Wall Street Journal's graphics team. I speak at conferences about accessibility when I can, including The Online News Association, The Society for News Design, and IRE/NICAR.
I'm certified with the International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP) as one of about 2,000 or so people in the world who have a Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies credential. I'm currently working toward the IAAP's Web Accessibility Specialist credential and the Department of Homeland Security’s Trusted Tester certification. I'll eventually begin working toward certification on document accessibility, too.
I am always interested in hearing about consulting opportunities, or public speaking engagements, so check out my projects, check out my resume, and shoot me a message!
